Why do you need a quick access gun safe? First of all, why do you need a gun safe at all? Gun safety in the home is of a higher priority than the actual protection that a firearm provides with or without a quick access gun safe. This is because the consequences of mishandling a firearm by a child in the home can be both immediate and grave. The consequences of not having a gun in the home is taking a risk that it won’t be available if it is needed for personal or home protection.
My wife and I have five children at home. This means ten hands that could potentially gain access to our firearm if left unsecured. Of course we take all the common-sense precautions including explaining to them about firearms, but children will always be curious and sometimes take chances outside of parental expectations. This puts us on the ultra-conservative end of gun safety in the home. But at the same rate, we want to be able to access the firearm if needed with as little delay as possible. This is what got this website started to review quick access gun safes.
No matter where you live, homes are at risk to get broken into and a firearm will not be passed over if found by a home invader. Without a quick access gun safe, this can be monumentally dangerous for someone that comes home in the middle of a home robbery and the thief now has access to a potentially loaded firearm. The homeowner at this point, unless a concealed carry permit holder or just returned from the shooting range, may be totally unarmed during a confrontation. This is not to say that a person that breaks into a home is not already armed, but a homeowner sure does not want to help him out!
A quick access gun safe for a firearm in a personal vehicle can also be a priority and not just because children can crawl around in a vehicle and get access to it. Vehicles are subject to be broken into at any given time when left unattended. This leaves a perfect opportunity for the criminal element to get access to a firearm and use it for purposes outside of personal protection.
With the above being said, having a gun in the home that is too safe for even the homeowner to have quick access to it can also be a problem. Delayed access to a firearm in a gun safe during the middle of the night during a home invasion can be adverse to the purpose of owning a firearm for home protection. The home invader is not going to say “I’ll give you a minute or two to get your gun from the safe in your bedroom closet. And I will pretend not to hear you working your way to it.”.
If the purpose of a homeowner’s firearm is for home protection then he or she will need fast access to it. At the same time, the gun needs to be reasonably secure from the access of others. A quick access gun safe is optimal for both objectives.
